MAVO Oxygen Training

NJAC 8:40 requires that patients being transported by wheelchair van and requiring oxygen administration be attended to by transported by an Emergency Medical Technician. In 2005 a waiver was issued permitting MAVOs to transport oxygen patients if they had training in oxygen handling from an approved program.

MAVO Transport oxygen is a program approved by the NJ Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services to comply with the training requirement for MAVO operators. MAVOs trained in this oxygen administration program can transport oxygen patients in a wheelchair van without an EMT certification.

This program can be taught by any MAVO instructor, or by anyone obtaining reciprocity to teach MAVO Oxygen. Reciprocity candidates will need to satisfy a clinical criteria and an educational criteria to obtain reciprocity:

Clinical Criteria(any of the following):
- Emergency Medical Responder, EMT, or paramedic
- Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Physician Assistant, or Physician

Educational Criteria:
- CPR/First Aid Instructor from any major accrediting body (AHA, ARC, ASHI, NSC, ECSI)
- EMT Instructor from any state jurisdiction
- Advanced Instructorship (ACLS, PALS, AMLS, etc)
